It’s been an interesting California road trip for the Colorado Rockies. Not only did they manage wins against the Dodgers and Angels, but now they have a chance to steal a series from the San Diego Padres after last night’s 5-3 victory. After winning more games on the road in July than the months of April, May, and June combined, the Rockies can either win the series this afternoon or walk away with the tie to kick off the month of August.
The left-handed Austin Gomber will toe the rubber for the Rockies, making his third start since coming off the IL. His last time out he put together a quality start, pitching six full innings and giving up only two runs while striking out seven. One thing to look out for is the long ball. Since Gomber came off the IL, he’s given up four home runs in two games after not allowing one in the entire month of June.
On the bump for the Padres is rookie righty Reiss Knehr. Knehr made his major league debut against the Rockies on July 9th, right before the All-Star break. In that start, he went just 3 2⁄3 innings and allowed two runs on three hits while walking four. Knehr operates with a four pitch mix of a four seam fastball, a changeup, a a cutter, and a slider. In his previous start against the Rockies, he struggled with his changeup command and threw his slider just five times.
