Colorado Rockies game no. 118 thread: Jon Gray vs Alex Wood

The Rockies aim to split the series with their final game in San Francisco for the season.

Last night the Colorado Rockies stole a 4-1 victory from the San Francisco Giants to officially avoid being the worst road team in MLB history. Now they have a chance to split their final series at Oracle Park for the 2021 season to cap off this road trip.

Starting for the Rockies is big Jon Gray, who is coming off a rather strange game his last time out. Against the Houston Astros, Gray only made it through 4 13 innings while giving up four runs on six hits... but he also struck out nine Astros batters. Against the Giants he’ll look for a longer and more efficient outing, but to also keep his strikeout stuff firing on all cylinders.

On the bump for the Giants is the left-handed Alex Wood. Wood last saw the Rockies on May 4th, where he gave up two runs on four hits across five innings, while striking out just two batters. Through 20 starts so far this season, Wood has an ERA of 4.22 and has collected 115 strikeouts.

Wood is someone of an interesting standout among rotation pitchers, in that he’s relied on just three pitches in 2021: a sinker, a slider, and a changeup. He can throw a curveball and a standard four seam fastball, but has yet to do so this season.
