After 28 games with the major league squad this season, Rockies fans are already familiar with Alan Trejo. The middle infielder has not made a huge splash in 46 at-bats this season in the big leagues, collecting ten hits and amassing an OPS of .586. But what some fans may not realize is Trejo has put together a fine 2021 season at Albuquerque, which is what has earned him the brief call-ups this season. This week was a prime example of Trejo’s impact, as he put up a .421/.450/.895 line in six games, stretching six of his eight hits for extra-bases while scoring six runs. Trejo is now hitting an even .300 for the season with a .945 OPS and, when considering the impending free agency of Trevor Story and lack of middle infield depth in the upper levels of the Rockies’ farm system, is making a strong case to have a shot at earning a big league job out of camp next season.
Triple-A: Albuquerque Isotopes (3-4, 49-63 overall)
The Isotopes got one more game out of Colton Welker (No. 6 PuRP) before he was promoted to the Rockies major league roster. Welker earned his first three hits and run batted in following the promotion.
For the Isotopes, Brian Serven had a nice week at the plate, hitting three homers and driving in five runs. Elehuris Montero (No. 5 PuRP) also got his first full week of action in Albuquerque and put up numbers reminiscent to his Hartford season totals. Montero was 8-for-26, accumulating four extra-base hits — including a home run — and drove in six runs. He now has a .325/.341/.600 line in ten games with the Isotopes.
Double-A: Hartford Yard Goats (0-6, 37-75 overall)
Like their elder brothers, Hartford also recently lost a player to the major league roster following the promotion of Ryan Feltner (No. 14 PuRP). Feltner made his big league debut on August 5th in a rocky outing at home against the Atlanta Braves. Feltner’s second start was better, as he notched six strikeouts in 3 2⁄3 innings on the road against the Philadelphia Phillies.
It was a tough week for Hartford otherwise, as they dropped all six games against Somerset (NYY). One bright spot was a former Rockies hurler making progress in his road back to the majors as Peter Lambert made his sixth start since returning to game action in August. Lambert threw 37 pitches over three innings with four strikeouts and no walks issued. Karl Kauffman (No. 20 PuRP) also had another fine outing, throwing 5 1⁄3 innings of one run ball with only three hits allowed. He has now allowed three runs or less in his last four starts.
High-A: Spokane Indians (3-3, 63-49 overall)
Mitchell Kilkenny (No. 21 PuRP) had an outstanding start this week against Vancouver (TOR). Kilkenny allowed one run over 7 2⁄3 innings, with only one walk issued and struck out four Canadians hitters. Dugan Darnell was also excellent on the mound, throwing three perfect innings over two games, notching two saves and five strikeouts. Between Fresno and Spokane this year, Darnell has a 2.06 ERA over 52 1⁄3 innings with a .177 average against and a healthy 6.1 strikeout-to-walk ratio.
Low-A: Fresno Grizzlies (1-0, 72-37 overall)
The majority of Fresno’s series on the road in Modesto was abruptly cancelled due to a COVID-19 outbreak in the Nuts’ organization. Fresno did win the lone match-up between the two teams. Drew Romo (No. 7 PuRP) drove in three runs on three hits in the victory. Since missing nearly two weeks in the middle of July, Romo has put up a .361/.385/.462 line in his last 30 games.
ACL Rockies (2-3, 37-15 overall)
Despite posting a losing record for the week, the Rockies Arizona Complex League squad continues to play well. 2019 draft pick Yorvis Torerralba, son of former Rockies’ catcher Yorvit Torrealba, had four hits and four stolen bases during the week. Adael Amador (No. 18 PuRP) had seven knocks in 17 at-bats over four games. The 18 year-old Amador now has a .295 average over his first 149 professional at-bats and owns an .805 OPS so far.
