After Kyle Freeland and the bullpen shut out the Washington Nationals’ lineup on Saturday evening, the Colorado Rockies now sit on the verge of their first six-game winning streak and first road series sweep of the season (second if you count the postponed Atlanta series).
On the mound for the Rockies will be Jon Gray. Gray went over a month without earning a win until his last outing in Atlanta, where he allowed two runs over five strong innings. Gray has not pitched past the fifth inning in five of his last six starts and hasn’t reached the seventh inning since July. He is 0-3 in his career against Washington with an ERA over seven in five starts, but is hoping his luck will change this time around.
Opposing Gray will be Paolo Espino. Espino enters the game with an ERA north of four in 16 games started this season for the Nationals. He took a tough-luck loss against the Miami Marlins last start and has allowed three runs or fewer in four of his last five appearances. He has not faced the Rockies in 46 career games played, so the Rockies’ hitters may be looking to take some pitches the first time through the order to get a feel for Espino.
