Tell me if you’ve heard this before: the Rockies lost last night 11-4 after giving up seven runs in the first two innings. And after that unfortunate game came unfortunate news: starter Noah Davis, who previously held a record-low 0.93 ERA, was placed on the IL with right elbow inflammation. He’s the second Rockies’ starter to go down with the injury this season... and we’re only 29 games in.
But anyways, Austin Gomber will pitch for the Rockies this afternoon as they look to avoid the sweep. In his last outing against Cleveland, Gomber tossed five shutout innings, allowing three hits, three walks and three strikeouts. He earned his first winning decision of 2023 (and since July 12, 2022 against the San Diego Padres), and it was the first time he received at least six runs of support since July 2, 2022 against the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Gomber will duel against Dbacks’ right-hander Ryne Nelson, who is making his first-career start against the Rockies. The 25-year-old former second-round pick made his MLB debut on September 5, 2022 and made three starts for the Snakes, posting a 1-1 record with a 1.47 ERA. In his last start in 2023 against Kansas City, he allowed four runs on 11 hits while striking out three over five innings.
