After a mostly quiet came, the Rockies came through with a win

The Rockies were able to take one in Chicago!

The first eight innings

The Rockies and Cubs had a quiet contest today until the fifth inning when the Cubs were able to plate one run. PJ Higgins was able to send Ian Happ home on a single. Alfonso Rivas also tried to cross the plate was called out at home. The Cubs had the lead.

The Rockies tied it up in the seventh, though. CJ Cron doubled was able to score on a sloppy fielders choice.

The ninth inning

The Rockies took the lead in the top of the ninth inning securing their lead, and eventually the win. CJ Cron walked and then was replaced by Garrett Hampson as the pinch-runner. Charlie Blackmon decided it was time for a triple and that gave the Rockies a one-run lead.

The Rockies will face the Cubs today in game two of three.

After yesterday’s loss against the Chicago Cubs the Rockies will hope that they can win one today.

The Rockies will send José Ureña (3-6, 5.81 ERA) to the mound. Ureña’s last outing against the Diamondbacks resulted in five strikeouts and only one earned run and he ended up with a no-decision. His performance against Cincinnati right before that was less than ideal, though. He gave up six earned runs on five hits and had only one strikeout.

The Cubs will call on the rookie, Hayden Wesneski (1-1, 3.12 ERA). Wesneski was a part of the Yankees minor league system until he was traded to the Cubs for Scott Effross. His debut was on September 6 against Cincinnati and has pitched in one other game against San Francisco.

Wesneski’s debut against Cincinnati went well for the rookie. He pitched five complete innings giving up only two hits, no earned runs. In that game he had an impressive eight strikeouts. His outing against the Giants was not quite as clean. He pitched 3 2⁄3 innings and gave up three earned runs on four hits, two of which were home runs.

The Rockies will need to find a way to jump on the rookie early. Hopefully they’re able to find hits instead of strikeouts. And Ureña needs to channel the quality performance we saw against the Diamondbacks.

On a fun note, today the Rockies’ rookies had their annual “get coffee and donuts in full uniform” excursion in Wrigleyville.

The Rockies fell to the Milwaukee Brewers in today’s contest.

The Colorado Rockies started off today’s game with a hot first inning, and despite the hot afternoon, cooled off significantly for the remainder of the game. One might even say their bats were ice cold.

The Rockies just couldn’t find enough offense

The Rockies came in and made a splash early. After a McMahon hit, a walk and a fielders choice, Charlie Blackmon had a two-RBI single that gave the Rockies an early lead. Garrett Hampson was also able to get CJ Cron home on a sacrifice the give the Rockies a 3-0 lead.

CJ Cron homered in the eighth inning and even though they loaded up the bases directly following his solo shot, the Rockies were unable to score any more runs.

The Brewers found a way

In the fourth inning the Brewers were able to come within one, even with two outs. Andrew McCutchen singled to bring home Rowdy Tellez follow by a double by Jace Peterson to plate McCutchen.

Things didn’t completely fall apart until the sixth inning, though. Ryan Feltner started out the inning but was replaced by Justin Lawrence after a single from Tellez and hitting Kolton Wong with a pitch. A Jace Peterson single tied up the game.

The real pain came on a Victor Caratini home run into the bullpen, giving the Brewers a three-run lead making the score 6-3.

The fun, though

Michael Toglia made his big-league Coors Field debut today (I have to specify because he did play here in the 2021 Futures Game) and had a dazzling catch at first base.

The boys are back on Blake in game one against the Milwaukee Brewers

The Colorado Rockies are back on Blake today and will face the Milwaukee Brewers for game one of three.

Today the Rockies will call on Ryan Feltner (2-6, 5.78 ERA). In his last two outings he gave up a total of six earned runs, three per game. In his last game in Atlanta, he struck out seven total batters. Hopefully today we see more strikeouts and less runs.

Opposite Feltner, Adrian Houser (4-9, 5.02 ERA) will pitch for Milwaukee. Houser was just activated on August 24th after spending nearly two months on the IL. Houser has pitched a grand total of 4 1⁄3 innings since his return, giving up a total of five earned runs, with all of those coming on his first appearance on August 24.

This series will also be the Coors Field debut of Michael Toglia, though he’s not unfamiliar with Coors Field after playing here in the 2021 Futures Game.

The Rockies won a fun game one to break a losing streak and then got absolutely trounced in game two.

Game 1: Rockies 8, Reds 4: Let the kids play

The Rockies were able to take game one in today’s double header thanks to some fun baseball played by the “kids.”

TJ Friedl against the world

The two runs scored by the Reds both came on solo home runs from TJ Friedl. The first home run came in the bottom of the fourth inning, with the second coming in the bottom of the sixth inning. Both home runs were tagged to Germán Márquez.

The kids, they’re fun to watch

Sean Bouchard, Michael Toglia and Elehuris Montero are a joy to watch. The top of the seventh inning brought great at-bats from all of them. The Rockies were able to have a productive inning following CJ Cron being hit by a pitch.

Montero singled, Toglia singled and Bouchard walked, but those three combined were able to score Cron. After a Hampson strikeout, Buddy called on Charlie Blackmon to pinch hit with the bases full of Rockies. A wild pitch tied of the game and the Rockies were back in business. Chuck was able to single in two runs to give the Rockies a 4-2 lead.

That wasn’t it for the kids, though. Brendan Rodgers started off the eight inning with a walk and with some heads up base running, found himself on third with Michael Toglia up to bat. Toglia was ready to increase the lead and doubled to bring home Rodgers and give the Rockies a 5-2 lead.

The rest of the game

Carlos Estévez had a less than thrilling eighth inning. He walked Colin Moran and was lucky that Friedl hit a foul ball and not another home run, however, the luck didn’t last long. Jonathan India blasted a two-run home run to make it a one-run game.

Elías Díaz started off the ninth inning with a walk, and with some heads up base running, was able to make it to third base on a Randal Grichuk single. It wasn’t pretty but Brendan Rodgers reached on a fielders choice, Díaz scored and Grichuk was tagged out. But, that’s not it. CJ Cron launched a two-run home run to make it 8-4. Anyone else like insurance runs?

The Rockies needed Daniel Bard to pitch a clean ninth inning and he came through.

On to game two.

Game 2: Reds 10, Rockies 0: Shut Down and Shut Out

The norm this season for the Rockies in regards to double headers is that they get thrashed in game one before putting up a fight and getting the win in game two. This afternoon they decided to flip the script and got completely shut down and shut out by the Reds in a 10-0 loss.

Ureña Not Sharp

Rockies pitcher José Ureña made his 12th start this afternoon and continued his Jekyll and Hyde season. After a solid outing his last time up against the Atlanta Braves, Ureña struggled this afternoon in a 5 1⁄3 inning performance against the Reds. Though he only gave up one walk, Ureña only struck out one batter while allowing eight hits. He gave up seven runs—six earned—and didn’t have a clean inning until the bottom of the fifth. While Chad Smith’s poor performance out of the bullpen and an error from Ryan McMahon didn’t help him this afternoon, Ureña wasn’t sharp as he failed to hit his spots and consistently had batters putting the ball in play.

Not a Chad

Rookie reliever Chad Smith isn’t on the hook for the loss, but is the man mostly responsible for the Reds blowing the whole affair wide open. Smith replaced José Ureña with one out in the bottom of the sixth. After walking two batters to load the bases, Smith faced Aristides Aquino. Aquino was taking his first full at-bat after replacing an injured Jonathan India. Aquino took two pitches without swinging before demolishing a center-cut sinker for a grand slam, putting the Reds up 10-0. That score would hold for the remainder of the game. Both Jhoulys Chacín and Ty Blach pitched scoreless, hitless frames to finish out the ballgame.

The Offense Sank in the Ohio River

The Rockies offense didn’t appear in the second game of the double header. Despite having 12 total baserunners, the Rockies failed to score a single run in the shutout loss. Eight of those baserunners were walked aboard and the Rockies had just four hits. The Rockies went 0-for-6 with RISP. Reds starter Chase Anderson entered the game with a 27.00 ERA and walked four batters, but the Rockies couldn’t get a hit off of him in 2 2⁄3 innings and struck out four times. The Rockies were able to get to reliever Derek Law over his two frames of relief with three hits and a walk, but couldn’t get any runners home to capitalize. Colorado only had one more hit over the next 4 1⁄3 innings, but did draw three more walks. Their lone extra base hits came from recent callups Michael Toglia and Alan Trejo.

Let’s see if the rain will hold long enough for today’s double header.

The Colorado Rockies will face the Cincinnati Reds in game two of this series tonight. Let’s see if the weather holds enough to get in at least one game today.

Germán Márquez (7-10, 4.97 ERA) will pitch for the Rockies. In his last start, he gave up only one hit in seven complete innings against the New York Mets, which was a drastic improvement from his performance against the Texas Rangers. In that start Márquez gave up six earned runs on eight hits. Hopefully he can find a way to channel whatever success he found in NY in Cincinnati today.

No matter the outcome, it’s exciting knowing that we get to watch Michael Toglia, Sean Bouchard and Elehuris Montero play. They are hopefully the future of this team and have a lot of talent to bring. I’ll take a rookie home run today, how about you?

The Reds will call on rookie Nick Lodolo (3-5, 4.30 ERA). He spent some time on the IL this season and returned in early July. Lodolo will likely be trying to strike out as many batters as he can. He has 82 strikeouts in his 67 innings pitched this season. The Rockies will need to be efficient to not be impacted by his strikeout rate.

Sean Bouchard’s first big league home run was not enough to give the Rockies a win.

Unfortunately, Sean Bouchard’s first big league home run was not enough to win this game. The Colorado Rockies and Cincinnati Reds game was tied until the bottom of the ninth when the Reds were able to walk off the Rockies without going into extra innings. Tonight’s game was filled with firsts for players on both teams.

I see you, Sean Bouchard

After a scoreless first two innings, Sean Bouchard blasted a home run. It was his first MLB home run and it scored two. I won’t lie, it was fun to watch. With that homer, the Rockies were the first on the board, giving them a 2-0 lead.

Following Bouchard’s home run, the Rockies offense remained silent for the remainder of the game unable to plate anymore runs which resulted in the loss.

Have a debut, Spencer Steer

You have to give credit where it’s due, even if it’s for the opposing team. In the bottom of the fifth inning Spencer Steer, who was making his MLB debut tonight with the Reds tonight, blasted a ball to center and gave the Reds one run. Steer went 2-2 with two walks and was the man who plated the final run after Jonathan India hit a ball to the infield in the bottom of the ninth.

The Reds second run prior to their walk off was a home run from Jake Fraley in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Some highlights amidst a loss

Michael Toglia is fun to watch. It’s great to see the two fresh faces (Toglia and Bouchard) making an impact on the field. I hope to see more of it.

The Rockies will face the Reds in hopes of adding some wins on the road.

The Colorado Rockies will start a three-game series in Cincinnati tonight. After losing the series in Atlanta, they will look to try and find success in Ohio. The Reds currently have a record worse than the Rockies, so they may be in for an even matchup.

The Rockies will send lefty Kyle Freeland (7-9, 4.88 ERA) to the mound. Freeland’s last outing resulted in a loss against the Mets giving up two earned runs on four hits. His two performances prior to that against the Giants and St. Louis resulted in a no-decision.

Opposite Freeland will be Luis Cessa (3-2, 5.36 ERA) for the Reds. Typically Cessa is a bullpen arm that very rarely goes more than two complete innings. His last performance was against the Nationals and it was his longest this season. Cessa pitched four complete innings giving up one earned run (a home run) on four hits. He is being called on now to provide some length that is not typically a requirement for him in light of some starting rotation injuries for the Reds. He has pitched 43 2⁄3 innings the entirety of the 2022 season which is quite low compared to Freeland who has pitched 142 innings.

If Freeland can bring his best, the Rockies have a chance to take tonight’s game. I’d be interested to see how Bouchard and Toglia do in a new ballpark.

The Rockies fall in game one to the Mets after facing a tough starting pitcher in Jacob deGrom.

A solo home run from Ryan McMahon was not enough to add another tally in the win column.

The not-so-great bottom of the third

Ryan Feltner gave up all three runs in the bottom of the third inning. The New York Mets were able to string together enough hits and had productive outs to score a run. But it wasn’t over then. With two outs Pete Alonso was homered to give the Mets a 3-0 lead. That was Pete Alonso’s 31st home run on the season.

The Rockies vs deGrom

The Colorado Rockies lineup had a real challenge against deGrom. They didn’t find their first hit until the top of the fifth inning when José Iglesias singled. Right after that Randal Grichuk doubled. Despite having runners in scoring position and having more than one baserunner, the Rockies were unable to score. Following the two hits Sam Hilliard struck out and Brian Serven lined out. The good news? The Rockies weren’t no-hit.

In the top of the sixth inning Ryan McMahon sent his 13th homer of the season over the wall to give the Rockies their lone run of the game.

That’s all, folks

After the sixth inning neither team was able to plate anymore runs. Both the Mets and Rockies had some traffic on the bases but were ultimately unable to send anyone home.
