The NL fell in extra innings despite solid performances from a pair of purple pinstripers

Colorado Rockies third baseman Nolan Arenado had a pair of singles and closer Greg Holland notched two strikeouts in the National League’s 2-1 loss to the American League in the 2017 MLB All-Star Game.

Arenado was the NL’s only player to finish with a multi-hit game. The 26-year-old, three-time All-Star looped an offering from Boston Red Sox left-hander into right field in the second inning and smoked a grounder to left against Kansas City Royals starter Jason Vargas two innings later. However, Arenado was thrown out by Red Sox center fielder Mookie Betts while trying to advance to second base on a fly ball off the bat of the Washington Nationals’ Ryan Zimmerman, putting a quick end to the NL’s hopes of getting on the board first.

In a 1-1 game in the eighth inning, Holland was called upon by NL and Chicago Cubs manager Joe Maddon to face the Royals’ Mike Moustakas, Justin Upton of the Detroit Tigers, and Michael Brantley of the Cleveland Indians. Holland made quick work of the first two, striking out Upton, before serving up a single to Brantley. But the three-time All-Star got Cleveland’s Francisco Lindor fishing for a slider to end the inning and keep the tie intact.

Charlie Blackmon, who started in center field and led off the game for the NL, finished 0-for-2 with a first-inning lineout and a third-inning strikeout.

DJ LeMahieu, the Rockies’ fourth All-Star, was held out of the game while he continues to deal with a nagging groin injury.

St. Louis Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina homered off of Minnesota Twins righty Ervin Santana in the sixth to provide the NL with its lone run. Seattle Mariners second baseman Robinson Cano, who earned All-Star Game MVP honors, took Cubs closer Wade Davis deep in the top of the 10th, giving the AL the eventual game-winning run.

Everything you need to know for tonight’s Midsummer Classic

The 2017 MLB All-Star Game takes place tonight in Miami, Florida . The biggest stars and the season’s top performers (plus a few others) take the stage at Marlins Park for a game that no longer “counts” but should be a fun showcase nonetheless. The game starts at 6 p.m. MT on FOX and FOXSportsGo.

The Rockies have a team-record four All-Stars this year: third baseman Nolan Arenado and outfielder Charlie Blackmon were selected by the fans to start for the National League, so they’ll each get at least two at-bats each. Chuck will hit leadoff after participating in last night’s Home Run Derby and Nolan will hit sixth. Second baseman DJ LeMahieu was selected as a reserve (but may not play due to injury concerns) and closer Greg Holland may be called upon to close the game down if the National League takes a lead into the ninth-inning.

The managers of the All-Star game are usually the managers of the previous year’s World Series teams, but due to illness Terry Francona will not represent the Cleveland Inidians. Cleveland bench coach Brad Mills will manage in his stead. Joe Maddon will be leading the National League squad.

Here are the starting lineups for each team, while the full rosters can be found here (Justin Turner of the Dodgers and Mike Moustakas of the Royals won the Final Vote). The National League, as the home team, currently are the slight favorites.

The Nationals have four (including starting pitcher Max Scherzer) in the starting 10, the Astros have three, and the Rockies, Marlins, and Red Sox have two each. Old Friend Corey Dickerson was elected the starting DH for the AL, representing the Tampa Bay Rays.

Scherzer becomes the fifth pitcher to start for both the American League and National League after starting the 2013 game representing the Tigers. Chris Sale is the first pitcher to make consecutive All-Star Game starts for two different teams; he represented the Chicago White Sox in last year’s game. Don’t expect either to stay in for long, though.

The Rockies will have four players in action tonight in Miami

Tonight the Midsummer Classic comes to Miami, Florida, for the first time. The MLB All-Star Game starts at 6 p.m. MT from Marlins Park, televised by FOX. Eight-time All-Star and Hall of Famer John Smoltz will join Joe Buck in the broadcast booth, with Tom Verducci and Ken Rosenthal working the sidelines. If you’re into this sort of thing, the MLB All-Star Red Carpet Show starts at 1 p.m. MT on MLB Network and runs until game time.

The Rockies are send four players (most in team history) to Miami: Nolan Arenado, Charlie Blackmon, DJ LeMahieu, and Greg Holland. Nolan and Chuck will be in the starting lineup while DJ (injury) and Holland (“Closer”) may or may not get into the game.

The All-Star Game is always a fun experience, even if the game itself doesn’t turn out to be all that exciting. The game no longer “counts” for home field advantage in the World Series. While one can appreciate the desire to juice up the All-Star Game, it’s best as a collegial exhibition between the biggest stars and top performers of the season.

The National League, hosting the game for the third year in a row, will cycle back to the home team for this year’s game.

Updates and discussion of the 2017 Home Run Derby

Charlie Blackmon will face Cody Bellinger in the first round of this year’s Home Run Derby. If he makes it past the first round, he’d very likely have a tall order in the second, and I mean that both figuratively and literally. The winner between Blackmon and Bellinger will face the winner of the Aaron Judge and Justin Bour matchup, and I like Judge’s chances. Here’s the full bracket:

The Rockies’ odds and everything else you need to know about the All-Star betting lines

It’s All-Star Weekend and that means we get to break down some All-Star prop bets. Continuing the gambling odds series that began in the preseason, we just can’t get enough of breaking down betting lines. There are a lot of good props this weekend, especially involving the Home Run Derby this evening Let’s jump in.

Home Run Derby: Monday, July 10 @ 6:00 pm MT (ESPN)

Who will win the Home Run Derby?

As of this writing, the Miami Marlins Giancarlo Stanton (+170) is a slight underdog to the New York Yankees Aaron Judge (+155). Stanton won the Derby last year and now defends his title at home, which is the only reason this is close. Judge should be the favorite. Of his 30 home runs on the season, 20 of them have gone at least 400 feet. He swings hard and hits the ball a long way. If you’re looking for a safe bet, look no further than Judge.

Looking at the rest of the field, the names that jump out at me are Colorado Rockies outfielder Charlie Blackmon (+2000) and Yankees catcher Gary Sánchez (+1600). Blackmon is getting no love from betting markets and has the longest odds of winning the derby. However, of the guys on this list, only two of them have averaged longer distances on their home runs this year than Blackmon has: Judge and Sánchez. Sánchez actually has the second highest average distance in the league this year behind only Kendrys Morales. If you’re a risk taker or want to hedge your Judge bet, Blackmon and Sanchez are flying way under the radar.

Longest Home Run: Over 499.5 feet (-350), Under 499.5 feet (+250)

Stanton hit two 497-foot home runs in last year’s derby, the longest home runs in derby history, and the oddsmakers believe a 500-foot shot is likely this year. We’ve heard a lot this season about juiced baseballs, and that may be what’s driving these odds. The other factor is having Judge and Stanton in the field, who both look like they could hit a baseball to the moon. I’m with the oddsmakers on this one: A 500-foot home run seems inevitable.

Total Home Runs hit by a player: Under 46.5 (-190), Over 46.5 (+150)

Last year, Stanton became the first player ever to hit at least 47 home runs in a derby, when he hit 61. Aside from Stanton’s performance, only Todd Frazier (42 in 2016) and Bobby Abreu (41 in 2005) have hit over 40 in the history of the competition. That said, four of the five highest home run totals in the derby have occurred in the last two years, and the home run revolution the league is currently experiencing leads me to believe someone will indeed hit 47 this year. I’d take the over at even odds. I love the +150 here.

All-Star Game: Tuesday, July 11 @ 6:00 pm MT (Fox)

Who will win the 2017 All-Star Game?

The American League (-115) is favored over the National League (+105) this year. The AL has been dominant in the event recently, winning four straight and going 22-7-1 over the last 30 games. The last time the game was decided by more than three runs was in 2012, so recently, pitching has been the key to success. The NL is carrying six relievers compared to only three for the AL. Having a group of guys who are used to coming out and throwing just one inning should be an advantage. The bottom line is All-Star games are hard to predict. I recommend staying away from the outcome here and focusing on the Home Run Derby props.

Who will win the All-Star Game MVP

Aside from Mariano Rivera winning the award in 2013 in his farewell tour season, the last time a pitcher won the MVP was in 1999 when Pedro Martínez took the crown. It’s a very safe bet the award will go to a hitter, and likely one of the starters. The last time a bench player was awarded MVP was in 2010, when Brian McCann took home the trophy.

The field is the favorite at +150, but individual favorites are Marcell Ozuna (+800), Giancarlo Stanton (+900), Bryce Harper (+1000) and Aaron Judge (+1400). If you think the AL will win the game, Judge is a solid bet here. Fan voting accounts for 20 percent of the final results, and Judge is a fan favorite. He’s your safe bet once again. Although I’d hedge with the field no matter which individual you’re taking.

Some other interesting names are Nolan Arenado (+1800) and the Houston Astros George Springer (+1600). Springer has a knack for hitting home runs in big moments and, should the AL win, I wouldn’t be surprised if he had a big hand in the outcome. Arenado can contribute with the bat and the glove, making him an enticing bet. If he makes a couple signature Arenado plays at third and shows off his power at the plate, he could lead the NL to a win. I really like the Arenado bet but my blinders may be on:

There you have it, your guide to All-Star Weekend prop bets. It should be a fun weekend featuring a lot of home runs and maybe some MVP caliber heroics from one of the Rockies’ four representatives. Enjoy the festivities!

Rockies prospects earn accolades for best all-around performance and best defensive play.

Due to the excitement of what was happening at Coors Field on Sunday, it’s easy to forgive the Rockies fan who either didn’t realize or didn’t care that the 2017 Futures Game was being played at the same time. Even MLB Network made the call to flip over to the Kyle Freeland’s no-hitter attempt during the ninth inning and leave the Futures Game without television coverage for a short while. However, the Futures Game had its own share of excitement and a lot of that was thanks to a pair of Rockies prospects.

In its superlatives after the game, Baseball America gave Brendan Rodgers the award for “Best All-Around Performance.” Rodgers singled, walked, and hit a sacrifice fly in three plate appearances. The hit came against Yankees prospect Domingo Acevedo’s 96 mph fastball.

One does not earn the title of best all-around performance without flashing some leather, though. Thanks to the Rockies’ focus on developing positional versatility in the minors, Rodgers had no issues playing second base instead of his customary shortstop. In the top of the third inning, Rodgers caught a 105.5 mph one-hopper to his backhand side and made it look easy.

Rodgers wasn’t the only Rockies prospect making flashy plays with the glove. Ryan McMahon came into the game in the sixth inning at first base and had two plate appearances, going 0-for-1 with a walk. However, in the ninth inning McMahon made his mark on the game and helped Team U.S. escape with the win. With one out and a runner on first base, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. popped a ball up that appeared to be headed out of play before McMahon made the defensive play of the day.

McMahon didn’t stop there. With two outs, A.J. Puk gave up back-to-back singles that, combined with some sloppy defense, allowed the World Team to get within one run. Puk then managed to get a soft grounder to third baseman Brian Anderson, who made a poor throw to first base. However, McMahon was ready to flash the leather again with an athletic play.

Both McMahon and Rodgers have demonstrated their offensive prowess this season while earning promotions before the midpoint of the season, and it’s nice to see that their defense is not lagging behind in development.
