Jordan Pacheco hit a three run, first inning home run, setting the stage for a Rockies win against the Cubs on Thursday afternoon.

Jordan Pacheco's value to the Rockies this season has come under a bit of scrutiny despite the solid batting average that he sports because he lacks power for the corner postions that he's played and he's generally been a defensive liability. On Thursday, the power showed up and showed a glimpse of the kind of asset that Pacheco could be with just a bit more in that department, as his three run first inning home run started the Rockies on their way to a 7-5 victory over the Cubs.

Former Cub DJ LeMahieu followed Pacheco with a two run homer of his own in the second, while in the third Chris Nelson and Matt McBride drove in two more, as the Rockies got all their scoring done early and then held on for the win. The Rockies reliable rookie trio of the last couple months, Pacheco, Nelson and Wilin Rosario, each collected two hits in the victory.

Jhoulys Chacin was fairly efficient early, allowing just three hits and a walk (including an Anthony Rizzo solo home run) in the first three innings, but he gave up three more hits and three more walks in the last two frames he pitched. The Cubs made a bit of a comeback in the ninth off of Matt Belisle by scoring two more before Rafael Betancourt squelched the rally and recorded the save. The Rockies are now just one win away from avoiding 100 losses.

Evening rainstorms continued, but this time the game was able to be completed, with the Rockies once again on top, moving them one step closer to avoiding the second overall draft pick.

Drew Pomeranz turned in his best performance since he last faced the Cubs in August. Though he walked three batters, he was more effective with his pitches, which allowed him to outlast the opposing starter for the first time in what seems like eons. Lasting through the fith inning, Pomeranz struck out three and also allowed three hits. He also notched a double for himself at the plate. He finally secured his second win of the season.

The Rockies offense got started right away. Charlie Blackmon walked in the first inning, with a Jordan Pacheco double sending him home. After advancing to third on a Wilin Rosario groundout, Pacheco also scored on a Tyler Colvin single. The Rockies added the other four runs in the third inning, beginning with a Blackmon home run, his second at the MLB level this year. Chris Nelson singled in Pacheco and Rosario later in the inning, with Colvin scoring the final run as Andrew Brown grounded into a double play.

Alex White was effective for two innings, rebounding from his previous relief outing. After setting down all but two batters he faced, the storms crossed Denver and forced a significant rain delay. The game eventually resumed, but the score remained the same as Rob Scahill kept the shutout alive in the final two innings

A win for the Rockies ensures that they will keep the third overall pick over the Cubs, while a loss restores hope for those few that really, really want pick number two.

With the rain shortened win yesterday, the Rockies passed the Cubs in winning percentage. With only eight games remaining in the 2012 season (thank the maker), the closest thing to a battle we have to end the season is whom between the two teams will find themselves behind Houston on the draft sheet next year.

Starting for the Cubs will be Jason Berken, a former starter for the Orioles that had been converted to setup relief in 2010. The 28 year old right hander spent most of the season with the Norfolk Tides, Baltimore's AAA team, where he had returned to starting. He was recalled for a short time in May, making one difficult relief appearance for Baltimore before being sent back down. Berken was claimed off waivers by the Cubs early in September after the Orioles designated him for assignment to make room for more September callups.

This will be Berken's third start in a Cubs uniform. So far, he has had two fair outings for Chicago, and is coming off a start against Cincinnati in which he threw six shutout innings, allowing just two hits and two walks while striking out five. Berken's game resembles a lot of the pitchers I've had to scout for game threads this year: he's susceptible to the hit and does not have especially spectacular walk or strikeout rates, though neither is particularly disastrous either. Berken is the kind of pitcher you want the Rockies offense to be able to get to. Berken has never faced the Rockies before, as either a starter or in relief, with only Jason Giambi having seen him before.

The Rockies send Drew Pomeranz to the mound in what will probably be his penultimate start this year, unless the Rockies choose to mix up the rotation on the final road trip, and if Pomeranz has another weak start today, he would very much be a candidate to miss his final start if they're looking for an opportunity to start someone else. After a good start to the month, Pomeranz' last two stars have been very poor, allowing eight runs over six innings between the two of them. He also walked five batters in his most recent start, a season high for the lefty.

One thing that has been unfortunately common between both his more and less effective outings is the infamous inefficiency that has plagued our young pitching staff this year. Even when Pomeranz was pitching more effectively early in the month, he was lucky to last four innings. Even with the pitch counts still lower than normal, most Rockies pitchers have found their way into the fifth at least a couple times. Pomeranz has pitched into the fifth just once since July, and that game happened to come against these Cubs in Chicago on August 24th. Pomeranz, not unlike his opponent, has demonstrated a vulnerability to the hit this year, and while he is better at striking out batters than Berken, he also struggles more with the free pass.

DJ LeMahieu and Tyler Colvin used powerful rainsticks to defeat the team that traded them away in a rain-shortened Rockies win.

The two worst MLB teams outside of Houston met up at Coors Field. If that sounds like a recipe for a an ugly, sloppy game with a crooked score, why...you'd be right! In this one, the Rockies gave up second place in the race to win the #2 draft slot in 2013 by winning an extra base hit party.

DJ LeMahieu fell a home run shy of the cycle, picking up the other three legs in reverse order his first three at-bats. He never got a fourth at-bat. Wilin Rosario had an off-game, following his franchise record streak of four three-hit games with just two in this one. He singled, set the Rockies' franchise rookie record for home runs with a shot to center, flew out to the wall and lined out to the warning track. He's cooling off.

Matt McBride assaulted a ball for a no doubt three run homer, and Tyler Colvin joined LeMahieu in abusing the club that traded them away, as Colvin yanked a two-run triple to the right-field corner and singled.

Jorge de la Rosa struggled in the first, giving up a leadoff home run to diminutive Dave Sappelt. After a two out ground ball to short resulted in Josh Rutledge airmailing the throw into the crowd, the Cubs piled two unearned runs on the Rockies' lefty. Starlin Castro would add a solo home run, as the ball really carried on a night that brought steady rain throughout.

After nearly three hours of playing through the rain, the game was delayed and ultimately called. Colorado needs to win at least three of their final eight games to avoid hitting 100 losses.

.

Sky Sox vs. Iowa Cubs?

Of the eight in the Rockies lineup, three were on the Sky Sox roster Opening Day (DJ LeMahieu, Andrew Brown and Matt McBride) while Josh Rutledge was in AA Tulsa. The other four - Wilin Rosario, Chris Nelson, Jordan Pacheco and Tyler Colvin - all had more than 200 plate appearances in the minors last year.

Of the eight in the Cubs lineup, four - Sappelt, Anthony Rizzo, Wellington Castillo and Josh Vitters - were in the Iowa Cubs Opening Day lineup. Another, Joe Mather, played in 55 games for the Sky Sox last season.

The Rockies open up a critical late season series against the Cubs with their respective futures on the line.

As you no doubt have read from Bryan Kilpatrick already, this series is absolutely critical. With nine games left to play, the Rockies and Cubs are deadlocked for a tie for the second worst record in 2012. Both teams were eliminated from contention for the top spot yesterday. Cleveland and Minnesota are within reach.

This really could be a big deal. The Rockies have selected in the top six just once, and that was Greg Reynolds (#2) in 2006. Imagine if they had tanked a little less in 2005 and ended up with Evan Longoria instead?! At any rate, count on this series being cited when these two teams find themselves in the draft room in June.

The main players to watch in this completely meaningless series will actually be playing college baseball come February.

The Chicago Cubs make their annual trip to Coors Field this week to take on the Colorado Rockies. Both teams enter the series with identical 59-94 records, which is tied for second-worst in baseball.

This series will be key in deciding who gets the second overall pick in the 2013 MLB First-Year Player Draft. So, the difference between Arkansas RHP Ryne Stanek and Stanford OF Austin Wilson (according to Keith Law's early rankings) will be whoever decides to stick to their usual brand of sucking for three more days.

I don't really care if the Rockies get the second pick or third pick in the upcoming draft, so I'll stay with rooting for them to win. In order to do my part to help ensure that's the case, I'm not going to say anything bad about the Cubs in this preview. Last time I did that, the Cubs took two out of three from Colorado at Wrigley Field.
