Up 4-0 in the sixth inning and with Juan Nicasio in the midst of a perfect game, everything seemed to be going the Rockies way. But, after Nicaso lost the perfect game the Padres scored seven unanswered runs until the ninth when the Rockies scored three to tie it and then won it in the 10th on a Dexter Fowler walk-off single.

The roller coaster that has been the Rockies season had another high moment Sunday afternoon at 20th & Blake. The Rockies, who have been plagued by inconsistency, once again found themselves in a close game after giving up a lead late in the game. However, the never-quit Rockies put up a three spot on the scoreboard in the ninth to tie it and won it in the ninth on a Dexter Fowler walk-off single.

Juan Nicasio was dealing, having pitched 5 1/3 perfect innings with seven strikeouts. His location was pinpoint and his pitch selection was excellent. Then, on a 2-2 pitch Nick Hundley went deep to break up the perfect game and put the Padres on the board. After allowing Hundley's home run, Nicasio gave up three straight singles before working his way out of the sixth. Nicasio's final line: six innings, two runs, four hits, one walk, and seven strikeouts. Still, a very solid outing from Nicasio.

Edgmer Escalona came in to pitch the seventh and gave up a solo home run to Cameron Maybin and a two-run home run to Mark Kotsay before leaving with an undisclosed injury. In the eighth, usually reliable Matt Belisle surrendered two runs and the Rockies trailed 7-4 heading to the ninth, setting the stage for Carlos Gonzalez and eventually Dexter Fowler.

Three straight one out singles from Jonathan Herrera, Tyler Colvin and Dexter Fowler brought the score to 7-5. After an Eric Young Jr. strike out, Carlos Gonzalez laced a two RBI double on an 0-2 pitch to right field to tie the game at 7. The Padres passed on Tulo and elected to face Arenado who flew out to right to end the ninth.

Rex Brothers pitched a scoreless 10th and picked up the win, thanks to Dexter Fowler's aforementioned walk-off single. Fowler finished 4-for-6 on the day and raised his average to .304.

Game notes: Troy Tulowitzki hit his 16th home run of the year in the first...Rex Brothers has now pitched 24 1/3 straight scoreless innings spanning 27 appearances...Dexter Fowler is hitting .436 over his last 10 games...Carlos Gonzalez robbed another home run and made several outstanding catches in LF...Nolan Arenado had two more defensive gems at 3B

The Rockies need this one to salvage a series split with the San Diego Padres. With the offense struggling in a 4-2 loss last night, Clayton Richard may be just what the doctor ordered.

The Rockies couldn't lose to the San Diego Padres early in the season winning the series first six contests against them. Now, it seems the tables have turned as the Rockies look to avoid losing three-out-of-four to the suddenly hot Padres.

All three games have been grind it out affairs with each game being decided late. One thing the Rockies have not gotten much if in this series is good starting pitching and Juan Nicasio will look to change that Sunday afternoon. Nicasio comes into this game with a 4-2 record to go along with a 4.76 ERA. This is his first time facing San Diego this year.

For Nicasio, it has been an up and down season, but since pairing with Yorvit Torrealba and developing a two-seam FB, Nicasio seems to have found greater success. Chase Headley is 6-for-9 off of Nicasio with two HRs and three RBIs in his career, but Nicasio will be catching a break as Headley is not in the lineup today.

Clayton Richard takes the hill for San Diego and as his 1-5 record and 8.38 ERA suggest, he has not been very good. In eight starts this year Richard has been dreadful, however, his lone good start of the year was April 14th against Colorado when pitched six scoreless innings and only gave up two hits in an eventual 2-1 Rockies win.

Troy Tulowitzki owns Richards so far in his career going 8-for-17 with 3 HRs and 10 RBIs off of the southpaw. Todd Helton owns a .421 mark off of Richards in 19 at-bats and Jonathan Herrera -who is getting the nod at 2B today- is a career 5-for-10 off of Richards and even owns a HR against him.

Since a lefty is on the hill the Rockies will once again go with Eric Young Jr. in right instead of recently recalled Tyler Colvin. Michael Cuddyer will be out of the lineup for a third straight game as he nurses an oblique injury.

Jeff Francis is back. Will that give the Rockies a boost?

The Colorado Rockies activated Jeff Francis from the 15-day disabled list today to start against the San Diego Padres tonight in place of Tyler Chatwood, who was injured in his last start in Cincinnati but should return for his next scheduled appearance. The Rockies designated Jon Garland for assignment to make room for Francis.

Francis' last start was his best of the season. Against the Cubs on May 14, Francis lasted six innings and allowed just a run on three hits and struck out seven. Unfortunately, he injured his groin running the bases and nearly missed a month.

Francis made one rehab start for Triple-A Colorado Springs, allowing three earned runs in four innings and striking out five.

The 32-year-old lefty has had his struggles this season, but it's worth noting that he's striking out more batters than he has in any year since his rookie season and his home run rate is likely to decrease at least a little bit.

On the mound for the Padres is journeyman left-hander Eric Stults. Stults pitched very well for the Padres after coming over from the Chicago White Sox a year ago and to some extent, has carried that success over to this year. Stults has exhibited good control, walking just two batters per nine innings while striking out six and half. He sports an ERA of 3.74 despite having a losing record.

Stults is a one-time Rockie, appearing in six games for Colorado in 2011. He was 0-0 with a 6.00 ERA.

First pitch at 5:15 p.m. MT, and the contest is the regional game for FOX Saturday Night Baseball.

Nolan Arenado was the undoubted hero of tonight's game, both in the field and at the plate. His night was topped off by a walk-off home run to lead off the bottom of the ninth. It was Arenado's first career walk-off, and the first walk-off home run of the year for the Rockies.

After jumping out to a 9-3 lead after the first three innings, the Rockies let an uncharacteristically bad outing from Rob Scahill tie up the game in the seventh inning. This set up the stage for anyone to become the hero of the game, and it was Arenado who came through, with a walk-off home run on the third pitch he saw in the ninth inning.

Dexter began the offensive charge with a lead-off triple, though he was thrown out at home the next play. After hitting 50 triples in the last four seasons, this was only the second triple of the year for Fowler. Troy Tulowitzki drove in one run, then Helton doubled in Tulowitzki and Gonzalez to quickly give the Rockies a 3-0 lead. The Padres answered with a two run homer in the second.

The Rockies rallied in the bottom of the second to score five runs. Carlos Gonzalez hit his first of two triples in the game. The Rockies chased Edinson Volquez from the game following Gonzalez' second triple of the game with one out in the bottom of the third. After shooting out to a 9-3 lead and hammering Volquez for 9 earned runs off of 11 hits and 2 walks, the offense was quelled by the Padres staff until the ninth inning.

Meanwhile, De La Rosa allowed plenty of traffic with 11 hits of his own allowed, but was able to limit the damage to four runs in five innings of work. He walked none, struck out five batters, and allowed one home run. Edgmer Escalona pitched one scoreless frame and Scahill entered the game in the seventh.

Scahill was ousted from the game without gaining a single out, in what was by far the worst outing of his major league career. Going into tonight, he had pitched 20.2 innings, allowing only 4 runs on 16 hits in that time frame. After hitting Chase Headley with a pitch, he allowed back-to-back homers to Carlos Quentin and Jedd Gyorko, a double to Kyle Blanks, and an RBI single to Cameron Maybin. Josh Outman, who replaced Scahill, walked Yasmani Grandal and Chris Denorfia to load the bases. Everth Cabrera then singled in Cameron Maybin, charging Scahill with his fifth earned run.

Nolan Arenado's walk off homer on the third pitch he saw from Joe Thatcher killed the comeback that San Diego had tried to stage. It was all around an excellent night from Arenado, who provided great offensive moments on top of the elite level of defense we are all starting to expect of him. Arenado made two great defensive plays in the game, one in the fifth to kill a budding rally, and again in the eighth.
